A clause is a group of words that contains a verb (and usually other components too). A clause may form part of a sentence or it may be a complete sentence in itself.
A clause can be distingued from a phrase, which does not contain a subject and a verb (f.e. in the afternoon, drinking from the bowl).
Main Clause (Independent clause):
It's a clause that can stand alone as a sentence, containing a subject and a predicate with a finite verb. As I was there in the sentence I was there when he arrived.

Subordinate Clause ( Dependent clause):
It's clause that cannot function syntactically as a complete sentence by itself but has a nominal, adjectival, or adverbial function within a larger sentence.
